A skilled nursing home wit 100 beds and 150 employees are being planned by next year in Hilo. The project will cost $18.7 million for development. People believe that the benefits are multiple to the community. Greg Pyle of Regency Pacific Inc. said that the facility would provide more long term care beds while reducing the strain on acute care beds.

More than 95 percent of Hawaii’s nursing home beds were filled in 2007 adding to it Hawaii County’s nursing home occupancy rate was 96 percent in 2006. This shows a strong need in Hilo community. Regency Pacific’s original plans called for a $40 million project that was to include 40 single family cottages and a 60 bed assisted living facility. Future expansion could include a West Hawaii nursing home.
