A skilled nursing home wit 100 beds and 150 employees are being planned by next year in Hilo. The project will cost $18.7 million for development. People believe that the benefits are multiple to the community. Greg Pyle of Regency Pacific Inc. said that the facility would provide more long term care beds while reducing the strain on acute care beds.
More than 95 percent of Hawaii’s nursing home beds were filled in 2007 adding to it Hawaii County’s nursing home occupancy rate was 96 percent in 2006. This shows a strong need in Hilo community. Regency Pacific’s original plans called for a $40 million project that was to include 40 single family cottages and a 60 bed assisted living facility. Future expansion could include a West Hawaii nursing home.
Rockingham Community College’s nursing programs are no longer under warning status with the N.C. Board of Nursing. The state board had placed the college’s program on warning when the result slipped in 2006 and 2007. Scores on License Practical Nursing Exam fell in 2007.
Once a program is on a warning status the state board starts thinking whether to provide full approval based on a three-year average of student pass rates. Since the result last year where 100 percent of registered nursing students and 93 percent of licensed practical nursing students passed the state board exam on the firs try, the board removed RN program from the warning status.

Jackson Gan, vice president of the Federated Association of Manpower Exporters has claimed that under the Nurses Assigned to Rural Service (NARS) program, the Department of Labor and Employment did not consider the level of training sought by foreign employers among Filipino nurses.
Labor Secretary Marianito D. Roque however says that NARS has considered the requirements of other countries needing nurses like Saudi Arabia. The Labor chief said NARS provides hospital care training for nurses at no cost. NARS program was one of the programs to stem the rising unemployment level due to the global financial crisis. However it is a fact that the lack of training among Filipino nurses as a major hindrance to their employment abroad.

UW-Eau Claire nursing Professor Lee-Ellen Kirkhorn and senior Jill Tapper are looking for women between 40 and 65 years old to participate in a study to prove the benefits of exercise and social engagement on mood and well-being.
No such study has been done in the past. There have been many experiments done to understand the effects exercise on the very young and the elderly but very little research has been done on the middle age. They add stating that this type of scholarship is necessary for nurses in caring for women.

The shortage of nursing in Nevada is one of the worst all over the world. A nursing summit is to be hosted by the Nevada’s Health Sciences System. Various ideas were discussed by the nursing professionals on how to improve the healthcare system. They also discussed on how to educate the healthcare professionals.
There is a proposal of representing Nevada at a national summit later this year. This has been decided by some of the participants of the present summit. The Health Sciences System is a part of the Nevada’s higher education and has an aim of improving the healthcare system in Nevada through a wide support and effort.
A new 2 year practical nursing program has been introduced by Fanshawe College. It has been recently extended to the Woodstock campus because of high amount of applicant demand and a significant need for nurses. The information session gathered nearly 65 people. Through the course the nurses will land working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehab centres, schools and community services.
There are 40 spots available for the first level, 62 week program. The last day for applying for guaranteed consideration to the practical nursing program is Feb 2. Graduates from the program will receive an Ontario College Diploma in practical nursing. They can later become a registered practical nurse by writing the provincial exam.
More nursing students in West Virginia passed their licensure exams last year in 2007. Members of the state Higher Education Policy Commission could not believe on the increasing rates of nursing students when the state ranked worst in the country.
Pamela Alderman, president of the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses said that they have been working very hard as they knew it was tough year for the state. The administration has been examining weakness in their curriculum. In 2007 West Virginia ranked 50th last among the states but that year about 81 percent of students passed their exams.
